Abstract

Dear readers,

The issue of “Experimental Oncology” you are holding in your hands is the anniversary one. Forty years ago, the first issue of “Experimental Oncology” was released. This journal was in fact the novel edition among the medical and biological periodicals existed at that time. The journal was set up by the initiative and with the direct involvement of the leading Ukrainian specialist in oncology, academician of Ukrainian Academy of Sciences R.E. Kavetsky who was the founder and the long-time director of the Institute of Oncology Problems of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (nowadays the R.E. Kavetsky Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology (IEPOR) of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine). Throughout its 40-year history, the journal has been and remains the leader in spotlighting the advanced ideas and developments in cancer research. The objective of the journal is to put forth the novelties in experimental and theoretical oncology facilitating and strengthening the close contacts between the scientists from different research centers all over the world who are working on the fundamental problems of the malignant growth.

The journal always provided space for the leading research teams to present their papers on the topical problems of carcinogenesis, tumor-host relationships, experimental therapy of cancer as well as plenty of other subjects pertaining to the experimental oncology. The reviews, original papers and short communications on various aspects of biochemistry, molecular biology, virology, immunology, oncogenetics were regularly covered on the pages of “Experimental Oncology”. Academician R.E. Kavetsky prepared his fundamental article “Theoretical basis and experimental data on tumor progression and metastasizing” that was published in the first volume of “Experimental Oncology”. Unfortunately, R.E. Kavetsky passed away having not seen the first issue of the journal that he had organized. The famous disciples of R.E. Kavetsky’s ideas are among the authors of “Experimental Oncology” throughout the whole history of the journal.

Many years passed since the first issue of the journal was published. Nevertheless, “Experimental Oncology” is still at the leading edge of cancer research. At present, the journal is indexed in several international abstract-and-citation databases including Scopus, Medline and PubMed. “Experimental Oncology” maintains the leading positions as scientific periodical being the first among the medical-and-biological Ukrainian journals in the rank of more than 100 journals in Ukraine indexed by Scopus. The Scopus Award Ukraine (2016) in the nomination “The Best Journal” is the testimony to that fact. The novel trends in cancer research such as microRNA, personalized medicine, target therapy, stem cells, tumor microenvironment are widely covered in the papers published in “Experimental Oncology”.

Nowadays, “Experimental Oncology” is a reputable international scientific journal. The leading scientists from different countries are among the Editorial Board and Guest Editorial Members. The geography of the papers submitted to and published in the journal has been constantly broadening that reflect the growing international IEPOR cooperation with leading cancer research centers in the world.

The IEPOR membership in the Organization of European Cancer Institutes-European Economic Interest Grouping (ОЕСІ-EEIG) provides an important background for greater integration of the Ukrainian oncological science in the European space giving the impetus for the development of the journal.

“Experimental Oncology” always presents the abstracts and the extended articles of the participants to the international meetings hosted by IEPOR. The International Conference “Tumor and Host: Novel Aspects of Old Problem” dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Institute was held in 2010. Now the second International Conference on this subject dedicated to the 120th anniversary of Academician R.E. Kavetsky is to be held in 2019.

The Editorial Board and the Guest Editorial Members of “Experimental Oncology” invite the scientists and all the interested parties to cooperate in publishing activity of our journal for more extensive exchange of views that will be advantageous for the promotion of novel concepts aimed at deeper understanding of the biology of cancer.
