Grigoriy Vasilievich Bondar
Ukrainian oncology has suffered an irretrievable loss. Outstanding Ukrainian oncologist and surgeon, Hero of Ukraine, Honored Science and Technology Worker of Ukraine, general director of Donetsk Regional Anticancer Center, Head of the Chair of Oncology of Maxim Gorky Donetsk National Medical University, member of National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine — Grigoriy Vasilievich Bondar died at the age of 81.
Grigoriy Vasilievich Bondar was born on April, 22, 1932 in Iskra of Velykonovosilkivskyi district of Donetsk region. In 1957, after finishing medical institute he has received an appointment in the Regional Hospital and within two years he headed the Surgical Department. In 1962, he has started his pedagogical activity, taking up positions of Assistant, Associate Professor of the Chair of Surgical Diseases of Stomatological Department, and the Head of the Oncology courses. In 1975, G.V. Bondar has organized the Chair of Oncology in Maxim Gorky Donetsk Medical Institute (now — University), which has been managed by Grigoriy Vasilievich along with Donetsk Regional Anticancer Center, till the last days of his life.
During the many decades of devoted service to oncology, Grigoriy Vasilievich has become the founder and leader of the school of thought, which is well-known within and outside the boundaries of Ukraine. The main areas of activity of this school are surgical and combined treatment of mammary, gastric, intestinal urinary bladder cancer. Under his direction and at his direct participation the effective methods of therapy of cancer patients have been developed and introduced in health care institutions of Ukraine and CIS countries, in particular, neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy in rectal cancer, combination of two stages of radiotherapy with endolymphatic fluorouracil courses, plastic replacement of urinary bladder after cystectomy, primary-recovery sphincter-saving surgeries at rectal cancer; modeling of function of pyloric sphincter at distal resection of stomach and gastrectomy; mastectomy with providing the advanced access to the subclavicular lymph nodes; intra-arterial chemotherapy in mammary, gastric, liver, rectal cancer.
During many years, G.V. Bondar has been a Chairman of the Republican Problem Committee “Oncology” of MH of Ukraine, Vice-President of Ukrainian Society of Oncologists, Editor-in-Chief of research journal “Neoplasms”, member of Editorial boards of journals “Oncology”, “Clinical Oncology” and “Surgery in Ukraine”.
Grigoriy Vasilievich was a gifted Teacher. He has risen generations of oncologists and prominent scientists, now being leaders of well-known groups and successfully working in Ukraine and CIS countries. Under his scientific guidance 12 Doctors of Sciences and 35 Doctors of Philosophy have been defended.
Grigoriy Vasilievich is the author of more than 800 research works, 15 monographs, 14 tutorials, more than 200 inventions. Also, a remarkable book for the wide range of readers “Overcome Cancer Together” came from the pen of scientist-clinician.
Self-sacrificing medical, research, pedagogical and social activity of G.V. Bondar has gained high appreciation in Ukraine and outside its boundaries. He has been awarded with high rank of Hero of Ukraine (2002), Laureate of State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology (2009). He was conferred the rank of Honored Science and Technology Worker of Ukraine. G.V. Bondar has been awarded with Order of the Badge of Honor, Orders of Merits of I, II and III grades.
In 1998, Grigoriy Vasilievich has been awarded with diploma of European Parliament for the development of methods for abdominal cancer treatment. In 2002, he has been elected as a Member of Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. In 2008, G.V. Bondar has been honored with Golden Medal of National Academy of Ukraine. Academician G.V. Bondar has also been conferred the rank of the Emeritus Professor of the R.E. Kavetsky Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology of NAS of Ukraine. Talented scientist and splendid organizer was highly responsible to himself and students, had extraordinary intuition, friendly attitude to the patients, modesty, simplicity and sincerity, which have earned him respect and gratitude of patients and colleges.
Memory of Grigoriy Vasilievich, outstanding scientist and amazingly noble man, will stay in our hearts forever. Thousands of successfully treated by him patients, to whom he has devoted his life, are the best memorial to the doctor and scientist-oncologist.
