EXTRACT OF GARLIC (ALLIUM SATIVUM) IN CANCER CHEMOPREVENTION
Garlic (Allium sativum), a member of family Liliaceae, contains plentiful of chemical compounds that are helpful in prevention and treatment of different types of cancer, in particular, allicin — a compound possessing antithrombotic, antioxidant, and anticancer activities. Allicin can penetrate very rapidly into different compartments of the cell and is completely metabolized in the liver. Experimental studies provide compelling evidence that garlic and its organic allyl sulfur components are effective inhibitors of the tumor growth.
