THE MORPHOLOGICAL, IMMUNOPHENOTYPIC, CYTOGENETIC, MOLECULAR GENETIC (MIC-M) CLASSIFICATION OF ACUTE LEUKAEMIA

Acute leukaemia was initially classified on the basis of cytology and cytochemistry. Subsequently immunophenotyping and cytogenetic analysis were also employed. Recently the value of molecular analysis in leukaemia classification has also been recognized. Acute leukaemia classification should now be based on Morphology, Immunophenotyping, Cytogenetic analysis and Molecular genetic analysis, a MIC-M classification. This classification permits the recognition of many specific entities that differ in their aetiology, mechanism of leukaemogenesis, clinical and haematological features, prognosis and optimal treatment.
